Soluble silicates are used in numerous processes for concentrating minerals. The chief use of sodium silicate in ore flotation is as a deflocculant for dispersing the undesirable siliceous matter. Only small quantities of silicates at concentration similar to those used in cleaning operations are needed. The ability of the silicate to form a layer of sodium ions on a particle surface is important in preparing that surface for specific separation. Sodium silicates aid in corrosion prevention, thus reducing ball wear in the grinding mill.
